CORONATION TREAT AT WESTHEAD
Over 130 Old People Entertained
The Westhead Coronation Committee are to be congratulated on the splendid party which they organised for over 130 old folks in
St. James' School, Westhead on Saturday.
An excellent tea of boiled ham and salad was served to the old folks by the ladies who included;
Mrs. L. Forshaw
Mrs. J. Roghley
Mrs. R. Horner
Mrs. F. Kilshaw
Mrs. Johnson
Mrs. A. Bickerstaffe
Following tea Mr. W.E. Bosanko (hon. Secretary of the Coronation Committee) introduced the
Westhead Coronation Queen, Miss May Southworth, who presented the ladies age 65 and over with canisters of tea and the gentlemen with penknives.
In her book "Westhead 100 years of village life" (2013), Jean Dutton noted the following about the celebration of royal events in Westhead;
"When the nation celebrated so did Westhead.
Royal occasions such as the Silver Jubilee Of George V and Queen Mary in 1935, and the Coronations of 1937 and 1953 were celebrated with enthusiasm.
For the Coronation of George IV and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 the whole village worked together to make it a day to remember. There was a grand pageant organised by Mrs. Archer.
The Coronation Queen was Daisy Roughley and she was crowned by Mrs. John Prescott.
1953 saw the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. According to the programme, it would appear that the festivities which took place, followed a similar pattern to those of the Queen's parents sixteen years earlier.
Permission was given by Birchall's from Mawdsley's Farm for the field by the Halton Castle to be used for the celebrations.
Mary Southworth was the Coronation Queen, a photograph of the day shows her riding in the procession through the village in a very smart landau. Although it is summer, the spectators are carrying the coats of those in the procession and no-one is wearing summer clothes. Typical British weather!"
