Lily's Memories of her grandfather, Superintendent of Police, Edward Dorset
In 1986, Geoff Howard wrote an article for the Ormskirk Advertiser's special edition marking the 700th aniversary of the Ormskirk Market Charter. In the article ninety year old Lily Jones recounted some of her memories of the town including an account of her grandfather Superintendent of Police, Edward Dorset.
Edward Dorset came to Ormskirk as a sergeant in 1847, he was appointed inspector 10 years later, and superintendent in 1864.
When he retired, Supt. Dorset was presented with a gold keyless watch, guard and whistle and a purse of money from his friends in Ormskirk and district.
Many years earlier when he was aged 18 and stationed in London, the young Edward Dorset had ridden escort to Queen Victoria on the occasion of her 18th birthday.
Lily remembered her grandfather who died in 1902, the same year as her father William Henry.

ORMSKIRK COMRADES - ROLL OF HONOUR
They went with songs to the battle they were young
Straight of limb, true to eye, steady aglow
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered
They fell with their faces to the foe
ORMSKIRK COMRADES - ROLL OF HONOUR
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
